Venue

Heraklion, situated on the northern coast of Crete, is a vibrant city that seamlessly blends a Mediterranean atmosphere with an energetic urban rhythm. Rather than being solely defined by its ancient past, Heraklion today functions as a modern cultural and academic hub, with vibrant pedestrian areas, landmark squares, and a strong local identity shaped by its people and traditions. Its walkable city center, lively cafés, and seaside promenades offer delegates an accessible and enjoyable environment beyond the conference schedule.

As part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Heraklion continues to invest in cultural innovation and creative engagement. Its recognition as a World City of Gastronomy further highlights the city’s emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, regional food knowledge, and the contemporary expression of Cretan cuisine.

Conference Venue

The conference will take place at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU or acronym in Greek ELMEPA), in the new facilities of the School of Health Sciences and is a ten minutes’ walk from the University entrance.

The University is located a short distance from the centre of Heraklion and can be easily reached by taxi or local bus.

Discovering Heraklion

Heraklion combines rich cultural heritage with a vibrant atmosphere.  Visitors will find a variety of historical sites, museums, restaurants, and seaside promenades.

Highlights include:

  • Knossos Palace, the most significant archaeological site of the Minoan Civilisation, where the myth of Minotaur and the Labyrinth, took place.
  • Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the most important museums in Greece.
  • Koules Fortress, the Venetian fortress guarding the harbour.
  • The Venetian harbour and the well-established walk on the breakwater promenade extending into the sea.
  • Heraklion has been recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, highlighting its culinary heritage rooted in the traditions of Cretan Cuisine.

Participants who wish to extend their stay may also consider visiting other destinations on the island, such as Rethymnon, Chania and Agios Nikolaos, frequently and well connected by public transportation.   Heraklion is also close to Santorini Island, a ferry route serviced daily, a 4–6-hour trip.

Several excursions will be organized as part of the conference programme. Further details will be provided closer to the conference dates.

Beyond the academic programme, Crete offers a unique blend of history, culture and Mediterranean hospitality, providing an inspiring setting for scholarly exchange and memorable experiences.
