Getting to Crete

By Air

The main gateway to the island is Heraklion International Airport, also known as Nikos Kazantzakis with IATA coding HER, located approximately 5km from the city centre of Heraklion city centre.

The airport is well connected to both domestic and international destinations.  In September, which is a busy travel period, numerous airlines operate charter flights, connecting direct several European cities.   There are frequent daily connections from mainland Greece, Athens (ATH) or Thessaloniki (SKG).  Major airlines serving these routes are Aegean Airlines and Sky Express.

By Ferry

Heraklion can also be reached by ferry from Athens, departing from Port of Piraeus.  Several ferry companies operate daily services, departing approximately at 21.00 and travelling overnight arriving at Heraklion at approximately 6.00.  Major ferry companies are Minoan Lines and Blue Star Ferries.

The port is located near the city centre.
